Eating out

For most people dining out is one of the great pleasures of their break or holiday, so we have drawn up a short-list of places that we go to ourselves. These days Cornwall has many good restaurants serving well prepared local food. There are a couple of pubs close to Bay House and - slightly further afield - two inexpensive restaurants that are included in the 2011 Good Food Guide.

Trelowarren
Bistro style restaurant. Delightful setting in the converted old carriage house at Trelowarren manor. Highly competent cooking at a price little above what the pubs charge. Now a main entry in The Good Food Guide. Good craft centre in adjacent buildings during the day. (20 minute drive). 01326 221595

Kota
People are very enthusiastic about this place, run by an ex-London based chef who takes local ingredients and gives them an Asian twist. Excellent location overlooking Porthleven harbour but indoors only. Now a main entry in The Good Food Guide. (30 minute drive).

Ship Inn
This pub has been taken over by the people who used to run the restaurant at the local sailing club. They are extremely good, so much so that we joined the sailing club just so that we could eat there. Presumably others had the same idea because the place had never been more packed.  (15 minute drive).01326 221240

Top House
Friendly unpretentious Cornish pub in Lizard village with low beams, walls covered in historic lifeboat pictures. Traditional pub fare (5 minutes drive).

Witch Ball
Friendly unpretentious Cornish pub in Lizard village. The most southerly pub in the UK (beating the Top House by about 50 yards!) Traditional pub fare but people enthuse about the fresh fish. (5 minutes drive).
